We are very proud of our scholars and students that have travelled and studied abroad through our successful partnership with Fulbright NZ.  This continues in 2017 with two awards, the Fulbright-NPM Graduate and the Fulbright-NPM Scholar Awards.

Over recent weeks Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga has hosted and engaged in deep discussion and relationship building at Waipapa Marae, University of Auckland.



On Thursday 2 February and Friday 3 February NPM brought its researchers (Principal Investigators) together for a Research Wānanga focused not only on whakawhanaungatanga but also on fostering greater cohesiveness across and within our Te Reo me Ngā Tikanga Māori, Whai Rawa, Te Tai Ao and Mauri Ora research programme strategy.

Te Pūwānanga’s Raumati (Summer) Issue includes stories and images from the recent NPM Conference, the announcement of the dates to our 8th Biennial Conference in 2018, an outline of the intentions behind our National Māori Research Strategy, links to our recently published Strategic Direction document, NPM’s summer interns who have already begun their summer projects, and other stories and announcements on the work and activities of Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga.

Applications have been called for the new ‘Tohu Puiaki - Doctoral Completion Scholarships’ which will offer up to $20,000 each to six people completing doctorates either in English on Māori Language Revitalisation, or who are writing their thesis in Te Reo Māori on any subject.

Our Matakitenga or Vision translates to 'Māori Leading New Zealand into the future' and our research realises Māori aspirations for positive engagement in national life and the future of the country.

A new book, written by a Victoria University of Wellington academic and supported by an NPM Publication Support Grant, argues that genuine and durable reconciliation can occur only when the importance of Māori legal traditions in the Treaty of Waitangi settlement process is recognised.

New Treaty, New Tradition—written by Dr Carwyn Jones, a senior lecturer in Victoria’s Faculty of Law and a leading academic in the area of Māori and indigenous peoples’ legal issues—will be launched at the Faculty of Law on Thursday 8 December.
