Ngāpera Keegan (Ngāti Apakura and Ngāti Hikairo) received the 2018-2019 Te Pītau Whakarei Karahipi summer scholarship, which is offered in partnership with the Cawthron Institute based in Nelson.

Ngāpera is at Waikato University, studying towards a Bachelor of Science majoring in Environmental Science and over the past few months has been working on a project that examines the behavioural ecology of scampi, and aims to provide new knowledge on optimal growing conditions and animal welfare for scampi in aquaculture.

As well as working on her research project, Ngāpera was also able to participate in professional development activities that included presentations to Cawthron staff and Rotary about the project, as well as a radio interview. Link here
