Privileging whānau voices, whakapapa narratives towards whānau ora

The COVID-19 pandemic forced the closure of Whakarewarewa Village Tours. The hapū of Whakarewarewa resolved to re-open the village in December 2020 however, the decimated context of the tourism industry, change of attention to a domestic market and the apprehension of the whānau to the opening of the village to tourists requires a thorough investigation and reconsideration of what is on offer for tourists in the village.
 
The principal goal of this research project therefore is to understand the principles and processes the hapū of Whakarewarewa Village might use to redefine what tourism could look like at this iconic destination post-COVID-19.

Developing a Māori Theory of Value

The theory of value research platform is concerned with considering:

  • How can the values that drive the Māori economy be understood and articulated within a theoretical context?
  • How can the values that drive the Māori economy be utilised by Māori communities to enhance wellbeing?

The theory of value platform project seeks to build on research conducted by the Whai Rawa theme in the areas of Indigenous economics and entrepreneurship and Māori enterprise. Māori values research has indicated that they go beyond Māori business and entrepreneurship.

Entrepreneurial ecosystem efficacy for indigenous entrepreneurs

The overarching research question is: what constitutes entrepreneurial ecosystem efficacy with respect to indigenous entrepreneurs’ innovation intentions and activity? In order to investigate this overarching research question, the following questions will be explored: (i) how do Māori entrepreneurs think about innovation? (ii) How does enterprise assistance support Māori entrepreneurs’ to innovate? And (iii), what are the implications for enterprise assistance targeting Māori entrepreneurs?
