On the 12th June, at Waipapa Marae (University of Auckland) the Faculty of Law held a day long symposium on Māori Engagement with the Extractive Industry. The aim of the Symposium was to explore Māori engagement with the industry, both off-shore and on-shore, with a focus on best practice in relation to consultation, preparation of impact assessments and agreement making. Speakers considered the implications of recent developments in international law on government regulation and business practice and policy - including the UN's Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples - as well as best practice examples from Canada and Australia. The symposium was supported by Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga and the New Zealand Law Foundation and organised in association with the New Zealand Centre for Human Rights Law, Policy and Practice, University of Auckland.
