NPM's Co-Directors encourage Māori early-career researchers and post-graduate students to get involved in a new Royal Society Te Apārangi initiative to encourage them to celebrate and share their research, innovations, discoveries and insights.



The 150 Years of Discovery: Emerging Research video competition aims to tap into the research stories of early career researchers who are driving the future of science, society and culture; contributing to the growth of our economy, industry, and cultural sectors in New Zealand and globally.

The JR McKenzie Trust (JRMT), which has a legacy of over 75 years of working for social justice and inclusion in Aotearoa, has established the Peter McKenzie Project – a project and fund dedicated to reducing child and family poverty in Aotearoa New Zealand. $15 million has been allocated over a period of up to 20 years, to try to achieve positive social change. 

Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga (NPM) is delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Linda Waimarie Nikora (Te Aitanga a Hauiti, Ngāi Tūhoe) to the position of Co-Director of NPM, and Professor of Māori Studies based at Te Wānanga o Waipapa, University of Auckland.

The Te Kotahi Research Institute is holding a series of events from July - October 2017, which have been sponsored by Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga.

The first of the Tikanga Rangahau National Wānanga Series will be held at Massey University in New Plymouth from Tuesday 15 August - Thursday 17 August.

The second of these research wānanga will be held at the University of Auckland from Wednesday 30 August - Thursday 31 August.

Award to assist students attend the 2017 Law and Society Association of Australia and New Zealand (LSAANZ) Conference.



We recently highlighted an upcoming opportunity for 10 Māori students to attend this years LSAANZ Conference, which is being hosted by Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga and the University of Otago, in Dunedin from the 6-9 December and we have now opened the online applications process.

NPM Principal Investigators Professor Rawinia Higgins and Professor Poia Rewi, together with researcher Vincent Olsen-Reeder have launched and published a series of reports from the long term research programme Ngā Whakakitenga a Te Kura Roa: Whaihua

Seven individual reports have been presented to Te Kōhanga Reo and Te Ataarangi, from this research programme which was first initiated in 2010.

NPM Principal Investigator, Fulbright-NPM Scholar and project leader on the NPM research project Ringihia i te ketenui a Tane: The language of the Stars, Associate Professor Rangi Matamua (Tūhoe), University of Waikato - has continued his innovative work into Māori Astronomy with the recently launched book Matariki - The Star of the Year.
