Associate Professor Metiria Stanton Turei

My research interests include Mātāpono Ture o te Māori/Māori legal principles, Te Mātauranga Ture o te Māori/Māori jurisprudence and Te Ariā ā-Ture o ngā Iwi Taketake/Indigenous Legal Theory. I also research visual jurisprudence and visual art. My LLM thesis was on the Visual Literacy of Māori Law.

I built a career as a social activist, lawyer and member of the New Zealand Parliament over 20 years before moving to develop my art practice and re-engage in legal education. I was a member of the New Zealand Parliament for 15 years and Co-leader of the Green Party for 9 years.  I am undertaking a MFA at Te Kura Matatini – Dunedin School of Art. My art work is in performative textiles, photography and sculpture, Indigenous Futurism and rangatiratanga.
