Māori have higher rates of diabetes Amputations than non-Māori. The Rangahau will utilise Kaupapa Māori methodology to explore experiences of Māori, who have had a lower limb amputation due to diabetes.
The Rangahau uses wānanga to kōrero to participants about the experiences of Podiatry foot screening provided by podiatrists before they received an amputation. The study will allow whānau who have received an amputation a chance to share their story around their experiences of the Podiatry screening they received before they had an amputation.
The questions will offer them a chance to share their individual journey. The data, or taonga, collected from the interviews will be used as the basis of a thesis for my Doctor of Health Science qualification. This rangahau will contribute to improved Podiatry foot screening services for Māori with diabetes mellitus to reduce amputations.
The rangahau aligns with NPM Matakitenga and will uphold Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Recruitment will be by way of Karanga out to established networks and rohe, and marae where I have practiced Podiatry and lived for the past 20 years. This brings established trust to the rangahau. Taonga will be gathered by wānanga, in person or online, as the whānau prefer. Koha and kai will be provided and the kōrero will be analysed using Te Ata Pu rākau. A Māori framework for analysis.
Dissemination will be through presentations and reports back to referrers, participants, Manurewa Marae, NZSSD conference, Hamilton, HiNZ conference, Hamilton, INIHKD RIE, Texas New Mexico, MAI ki Aronui, Nga Pae o Te Maramatanga conference and the NZ Podiatry registration board.
