Awardee: Josephine Davis (Ngā Puhi me Ngāti Whatua Orakei), The University of Auckland
The Awardee will undertake the Whakaaweawe Impact and Transformation Grant titled Māori nurse practitioners: Kaupapa Māori workforce development realising equity.
The Māori nurse practitioner (NP) workforce can transform health outcomes for whānau Māori and local hapori (communities) by delivering comprehensive and meaningful primary healthcare services. Currently, no national framework or policy supports the development of Māori registered nurses (RNs) to become NPs, perpetuating nursing workforce inequities.
This Kaupapa Māori research project aimed to understand the pūrākau (storied experiences) for Māori RNs on their pathway to become NPs; and secondly to develop a framework to guide this. Creative dissemination strategies were identified as important to our participants and key stakeholders in developing the model. Using a transdisciplinary approach, we seek to partner with Māori creatives in research translation and sharing that remains culturally grounded.
This framework offers a novel approach for Māori nurse workforce development in Aotearoa and has the potential to inform advanced nursing workforce development for other Indigenous communities. The research outputs will provide clear guidance to health providers and organisations that align with Te Tiriti o Waitangi, New Zealand Health Strategy 2023, and recommendations from WAI 2575 to achieve health and workforce equity.
